Sex-Linked Inheritance in Pigeons¶
Sex in pigeons is decided by the sex chromosomes, and it works the opposite way to mammals: males are ZZ and females ZW. This difference gives sex-linked traits their own distinctive pattern of inheritance, and it also underlies the well-known "criss-cross inheritance" seen in racing pigeons.
Plain-language reading (an analogy)¶
The sex chromosomes are like a gender express train: a male pigeon (ZZ) has two Z carriages, a female (ZW) one Z and one W. Genes sitting on the Z (sex-linked genes) "depart" by special rules — the key to understanding sex-linked plumage colour inheritance and some patterns of how performance is passed on.
Sex determination¶
- Male pigeon: ZZ (two Z chromosomes);
- Female pigeon: ZW (one Z, one W);
- The sex of the offspring is decided by the mother's W or Z gamete (the reverse of the human XY system).
Features of sex-linked inheritance¶
- Sex-linked genes sit on the Z chromosome;
- A male pigeon carries two copies, a female only one — a female's sex-linked traits are inherited directly from her father;
- Criss-cross inheritance: a father's sex-linked traits pass to all his daughters, a mother's to her sons.
Sex-linked traits in racing pigeons¶
- Plumage colour: some plumage colour genes sit on the Z chromosome (the ash/blue and chocolate allele series, for example); a female can carry only one allele, which gives plumage colour a regular association with sex;
- Sex identification: molecular markers based on the sex chromosomes (Z/W) are the basis of DNA sex testing.
Use in breeding¶
- Understanding criss-cross inheritance makes it possible to design pairing strategies built around "transmission across generations";
- The association between sex-linked phenotypes and sex can help infer the sex of offspring (limited to particular traits);
- DNA sex testing (Z/W markers such as CHD1) gives a definitive result.
Common misconceptions¶
- "A sex-linked gene must affect performance" — sex-linkage describes only a gene's chromosomal location and says nothing about a trait's value;
- "Male pigeons are stronger because they carry double the sex-linked genes" — dosage compensation tends to balance expression levels, so no simple inference can be drawn.
Frequently asked questions¶
Is DNA sex testing reliable?
Molecular methods based on Z/W chromosome markers are mature and reliable, and are currently the accepted means of sex identification.
Can sex-linked inheritance tell you the plumage colour of the offspring?
For pairings with known sex-linked plumage colour alleles, the probability distribution of plumage colour and sex in the offspring can be calculated.
