Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 8 (LRP8)¶
The LRP8 gene encodes a member of the low-density lipoprotein receptor family and takes part in lipid transport and energy metabolism. The latest research in racing pigeons (Kulig 2025) reports that its polymorphism is associated with racing performance. This page covers its function, the evidence and the limits of interpretation.
Plain-language analogy¶
LRP8 is like a "fuel docking station" on the cell surface: it receives the lipid "fuel packages" carried in the blood. Long-distance flight burns mainly lipids, and differences in the type of docking station may affect how efficiently that fuel is used — this is precisely the hypothesis researchers are looking at.
What LRP8 is¶
The LRP8 (LDL Receptor Related Protein 8) gene encodes LRP8 (also known as ApoER2), a member of the LDL receptor family. It takes part in the recognition and endocytosis of lipoproteins, and plays a role in lipid metabolism and signal transduction.
Biological function¶
- It mediates the cellular uptake of lipoproteins;
- It takes part in lipid transport and energy metabolism;
- It also takes part in signal pathway regulation in the nervous system.
Role in racing pigeons¶
Over long-distance racing, pigeons rely on fat oxidation for sustained energy. Genomic research on homing ability (Shao et al. 2020, Molecular Biology and Evolution, PMID: 31501895) points to a genetic basis for energy metabolism and the homing phenotype; as a lipid-metabolism-related gene, LRP8 has been included in studies of racing performance in pigeons.
Research evidence (evidence grade B)¶
- Kulig et al. (2025, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules): studied the structural impact of GSR and LRP8 gene polymorphisms on protein function and their relationship with racing performance in pigeons. PMID: 40246119 | DOI: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2025.143181
Evidence grade definition: B = racing-pigeon-specific, peer-reviewed journal research reporting a statistically significant association.
Genetic variation and markers¶
The research focuses on polymorphic sites in the LRP8 gene and their potential impact on protein structure and function. Genotyping interpretation should be confined to the trait definitions of the original study.
Scientific limitations¶
- Association ≠ causation;
- A new 2025 study; independent replication has yet to accumulate;
- Lipid metabolism is markedly influenced by diet and training status.
Genetic testing and breeding applications¶
The LRP8 genotype can serve as reference information for a candidate locus related to energy metabolism, and is best used together with race results and multi-gene information.
Frequently asked questions¶
Is LRP8 a "long-distance gene"?
The current evidence is an association with racing performance; it cannot yet be defined as a "long-distance gene".
Can testing for LRP8 predict performance?
No. A genotype is probabilistic reference information.
Does diet affect lipid metabolism?
Yes. Lipid metabolism is markedly influenced by diet composition and training status; genes are only one factor.
