Feather Keratin (F-KER)

The F-KER gene encodes feather keratin, the basic structural protein of feathers. Its polymorphism has been studied in domestic pigeons (Dybus & Haase 2011), but direct evidence linking it to racing performance is lacking. This page states the current state of the evidence honestly.

Plain-language analogy

F-KER is like the "building material" of a feather: keratin is the brick that makes up the vane. Differences in the type of brick may affect the physical properties of a feather, but there are many steps between "feather material" and "flying fast", and the two cannot be equated directly.

What F-KER is

The F-KER (Feather Keratin) gene encodes a feather keratin structural protein. Keratin is the main structural component of feathers and determines their mechanical properties and form.

Biological function

  • It is the main structural protein forming feathers;
  • It affects feather strength, elasticity and form;
  • Variation in related genes may affect feather mechanical characteristics (background research: Haase et al. 2022, Scientific Reports, reported the effect of an FCBP gene polymorphism on the Young's modulus of the tenth primary feather, PMID: 35110587 — note that FCBP and F-KER are different genes).

Role in racing pigeons

Feather condition affects flight efficiency, which is why feather-related genes attract attention. However, research on F-KER in domestic pigeons is currently limited to polymorphism identification, and there is no evidence of a direct association with racing performance.

Research evidence (evidence grade D)

  • Dybus & Haase (2011, British Poultry Science): reported polymorphism of the feather keratin gene (F-KER) in domestic pigeons. The study is a polymorphism identification and does not include an analysis of association with racing performance. PMID: 21491240 | DOI: 10.1080/00071668.2010.549666

Evidence grade definition: D = biologically plausible, but racing pigeon evidence in pigeons is limited.

Genetic variation and markers

The F-KER locus is polymorphic in domestic pigeons and can be used for breed genetic research. It should not be promoted as a "flight performance gene" locus.

Scientific limitations

  • Direct evidence of an association with racing performance is missing;
  • There is no direct chain of evidence between "feather structure" and "racing results";
  • The functional significance of the polymorphism has yet to be clarified.

Genetic testing and breeding applications

The F-KER locus can serve as reference information for research into the genetic background of feather traits; it is not currently used for performance-related decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Is F-KER a "flight performance gene"?

The available evidence does not support that description. Research has been limited to polymorphism identification.

Are feathers related to flight?

Feather mechanics affect flight efficiency, but direct evidence linking F-KER to racing results is lacking.

Is testing for F-KER useful?

It can be used for genetic background research, but it should not be used to predict performance.
